Police: 2 young children dead, 2 adults in critical condition after apparent homicide-suicide attempt in Chicago

CHICAGO _ Two boys, ages about 1 and 2, were dead and a 70-year-old man and a woman in her 30s were in critical condition following an apparent homicide-suicide attempt in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood early Thursday, police said.

Authorities were called to the 7200 block of South South Shore Drive about 1:45 a.m. Thursday. Officers were called to building to investigate a "person down," and first found a woman in her 30s and her son, about 1 year old, on the ground.

A security worker at the apartment building then took officers to the 11th floor. Inside an apartment they found the man with cuts to his face and body. They also located another boy, about 2 years old, unresponsive in a bathtub. Police News Affairs didn't immediately have information on whether the woman also was the older child's mother.

The man said his adult daughter "began stabbing him and then jumped from the 11th floor with her 1-year-old-son," according to police.

Both boys were pronounced dead at Comer Children's Hospital, officials said.

The woman survived the fall and she and the man both were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where they were listed in critical condition.
