Aidan Turner’s topless scything scene in the BBC adaptation of Poldark has been voted the TV moment of 2015 by Radio Times readers.

Almost 20,000 people polled online voted for the actor’s meadow mowing as Ross Poldark in the BBC1 period drama, despite experts criticising his technique.

With 45% of total votes cast, the scene just beat Jay McGuiness’s Pulp Fiction-inspired Strictly Come Dancing jive with partner Aliona Vilani, which was chosen by 43% of the more than 45,000 people who took part in the survey.

McGuiness, of boyband The Wanted, went on to win the Strictly final this month, which attracted 11 million viewers.

Visitors to the Radio Times website were asked to pick from a shortlist of 32 scenes, with Peter Capaldi’s anti-war speech in a November episode of Doctor Who coming a distant third.

Turner buffed his credentials as a hearthrob over Christmas in three-part Agatha Christie drama And Then There Were None. His appearance in one scene, wearing just a towel, led to breathless responses on social media and the national press.

Poldark was a huge ratings success for the BBC, peaking with nearly 10 million viewers. A second series began filming in September and is due to air next year.
