Poker pro made a brilliant decision to fold a straight against a better straight

Sometimes, the biggest wins in poker involve folding.

We’ve seen players muck humongous hands like Thi Xua Nguyen tossing in a full house when her opponent had a better full house earlier this year.

Here we have Garrett Adelstein, the poker pro who also appeared on Survivor, who was playing in a cash game that was being streamed and ended up making the fold of a lifetime … in which he had a straight.

Let’s break it down: Adelstein (10-7 offsuit) calls a $300 raise from Andy (Queen-10 of diamonds) and a flop of 9 of clubs, 8 of hearts and 2 of diamonds comes out, giving Adelstein a chance at a straight. But if a Jack comes out, Andy will have one too. Adelstein ended up calling another $300 bet after checking.

The turn? A JACK! Hoo boy. Adelstein checks, Andy bets $475, Adelstein raises to $2,500, Andy re-raises to $8,000 and Adelstein calls.

A 5 comes out on the river, and here comes Andy with a $14,500 bet. I know I wouldn’t have the guts to lay down a straight … but Adelstein does.

Watch for yourself as he talks himself through it (WARNING: Some NSFW language is in there):

“Holy cow,” indeed.
