'Pokémon Winds & Waves' Fans Debate Possible New Starter Type Pattern as Fire/Ghost Theories Spread

"Pokémon" fans are once again deep in theory-crafting mode, debating whether the franchise is quietly repeating history with its starter Pokémon typings in "Winds & Waves."

A viral discussion on Reddit has sparked speculation that Game Freak may be heading toward a new "Fire/Ghost era" or preparing to break long-standing starter type traditions entirely.

Fire/Ghost Starters Fuel New 'Pattern' Theory

The conversation gained traction after fans compared current trends to the well-known Fire/Fighting phase seen from Generation 3 through Generation 5, where starters like Blaziken, Infernape, and Emboar all shared the same dual typing. That pattern was later criticized by players for feeling repetitive.

Recent Pokémon designs have added fuel to the theory that Fire/Ghost could be emerging as a recurring combination. Fans pointed to Hisuian Typhlosion and Skeledirge as examples that may suggest a growing design direction within the franchise.

Some players have even speculated that the Generation 10 fire-type starter, Pombon, could complete a loose Fire/Ghost trilogy if the trend continues.

However, the theory remains unconfirmed, and many in the community argue that future designs could easily break the pattern rather than reinforce it.

Alternative Starter Type Ideas Gain Popularity

Alongside the Fire/Ghost debate, fans have proposed several alternative typing combinations that could refresh the traditional Grass, Fire, and Water starter triangle.

Popular suggestions include Fire/Fairy, Water/Dragon, and Fire/Ground, which some believe would create more balanced and creative matchups.

Others have pointed out that Water/Ghost could also be an interesting addition, especially since Grass/Ghost and Fire/Ghost starters already exist in the franchise. For other fans, this is such a wasted opportunity for Inteleon, who can excel as a Water/Ghost sniper.

Community Divided on Game Freak's Direction

Despite the new discussion, opinions remain split. Some fans welcome the idea of repeating thematic typings like Fire/Fairy or Fire/Steel, while others argue that Game Freak should avoid revisiting old patterns entirely.

A portion of the community even expects Generation 10 to fully break tradition by introducing starters with completely unique or unpredictable typings.

In other news, "Pokemon" fans were also debating what type would be featured in the first gym in "Winds & Waves."
