Pokémon TCG Pocket replaces key Wisdom of Sea and Sky cards in packs after card art controversy

The launch of a major expansion in Pokémon TCG Pocket can always have some drama, but none will match the controversy surrounding two of Wisdom of Sea and Sky's founding cards.

For the first time in the game's history, the immersive art items of the two themed Pokémon have been replaced ahead of the pack's launch. The information has been officially shared by The Pokémon Company, confirming earlier rumors about possible art plagiarism regarding two card designs. The decision has been taken ahead of the official launch, which could be slightly disappointing for some fans.

Pokémon TCG Pocket will have placeholders in Wisdom of Sea and Sky packs for Lugia and Ho-Oh

Lugia and Ho-Oh are the two highlight Pokémon for the Wisdom of Sea and Sky expansion. The duo has their respective EX cards, which are exclusive to their packs. Lucky players can also obtain their immersive art cards, and the major controversy stems from these specific items.

The controversy started when Ho-Oh's immersive art item was leaked on social media. There were plenty of references to the card art appearing identical to artist Lanjiujiu's work back in 2021. Certain videos also appeared on social media that minutely describe the similarities in pose and general style.

The official statement on July 30 practically confirms what many fans had feared. The official statement claims that the card production team had provided incorrect materials as official documents to the illustrator commissioned to make those cards. While Ho-Oh's item was caught in the controversy, it appears that Lugia's card design might have had similar issues.

As a result, the packs will no longer release with the originally designed immersive art designs of Ho-Oh and Lugia. Players lucky enough to pack them will receive placeholder items temporarily. We still do not know when the replacement images will be added to the game or what they will look like. If you care deeply about the new designs, it's best to hold on to your hourglasses for the time being.
