"Pokémon Pokopia" has already earned praise for its relaxing life simulation gameplay, but one area always felt underdeveloped: its lack of underwater Pokémon.
It's good to know that players could restore towns, build habitats, and interact with iconic creatures, but aquatic species rarely had the spotlight. That changes with the release of Bubbly Basin, the first expansion included in the game's Expansion Pass, introducing a vibrant underwater world filled with beloved Water-type Pokémon.
Bubbly Basin Expands 'Pokémon Pokopia's' Underwater World
According to Polygon, Bubbly Basin transports players beneath the ocean's surface, where they can restore a submerged town using the power of Dive. The expansion follows the familiar gameplay loop that made "Pokopia" so enjoyable, but introduces an exciting aquatic twist.
Players cultivate watermelons, construct submarines, and rebuild underwater landmarks while exploring an entirely new environment.
Although the core mechanics remain familiar, the underwater setting delivers a refreshing change of pace. The new biome feels lively, colorful, and packed with aquatic charm that was previously missing from the base game.
Water-Type Pokémon Finally Take Center Stage
One of the DLC's biggest strengths is its celebration of Water-type Pokémon that have often been overlooked in recent games. After Popplio welcomes players into Bubbly Basin, they quickly encounter fan favorites such as Finneon, Luvdisc, Sharpedo, Lanturn, and more.
Instead of simply floating in the background, these Pokémon display expressive personalities within their natural habitat. Horsea spins happily through the water, while Stunfisk provides comic relief with its amusing insecurity about its flat appearance. Chinchou and Lanturn finally have an environment where their designs truly shine, making every interaction feel more meaningful.
Even Pokémon that previously failed to leave a strong impression become far more charming underwater. Corsola's adorable movements across the sea floor and Corphish's playful animations make both creatures far more memorable than in previous appearances.
Fresh Direction For Pokémon's Aquatic Life
Bubbly Basin arrives at the perfect time for the franchise. Earlier Pokémon titles from Generation 3 like "Pokémon Ruby" and "Pokémon Sapphire" heavily featured Water-type Pokémon, but more recent games such as "Pokémon Scarlet" and "Pokémon Violet" have focused primarily on land exploration.
While open-world environments allow Pokémon to roam freely, true underwater exploration has remained limited. Hopefully, that might change for the ocean overworld upgrade in "Winds and Waves."
This DLC solves that problem by creating an environment where aquatic Pokémon can fully express their unique personalities. Their animations feel natural, lively, and perfectly suited to an underwater setting.
