Pokémon Go’s 10th anniversary gift is a seriously stacked Mewtwo

Pokémon Go is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a gift that should make Trainers very happy: a free Mewtwo with maxed-out stats, a special background showing a moon, and a major boost toward Mega Mewtwo Y.

The anniversary celebration follows a massive summer for Pokémon Go, which has already seen Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y make their debut. The 10th anniversary festivities also brought the game’s original Mewtwo fantasy to life during a huge Times Square event in New York, where more than 1,500 Trainers joined forces to defeat Mega Mewtwo Y.

Now, Trainers everywhere are getting their own chance to add a seriously powerful Mewtwo to their collection. As part of the 10th anniversary celebration, Pokémon Go is giving all Trainers access to free Timed Research.

Completing the research will lead to an encounter with Mewtwo with maxed-out stats and a Special Background. That alone makes the reward worth chasing, particularly for Trainers who have spent years hunting for the perfect version of the Legendary Pokémon.

The Mewtwo will also come with the third Mega Level unlocked for Mega Mewtwo Y, giving players another reason to complete the research even if they already have several Mewtwo in their collection. The reward is essentially a birthday present from Pokémon Go that skips one of the most painful parts of the hunt: finding a Mewtwo with the stats you actually want.

There is one catch, and it is an important one. The anniversary Timed Research expires on September 6, 2026 (Sunday) at 11:59 p.m. local time. Trainers must complete the associated tasks and claim their rewards before the deadline. That means this isn’t a permanent research line that can sit untouched in your Special Research tab forever. If you want the max-stat Mewtwo, make sure you finish everything before the clock runs out.

Trainers who attended the special Times Square event on July 9 will receive a different Mewtwo with different stats and rewards.

The Times Square celebration was one of Pokémon Go’s biggest anniversary moments so far. More than 1,500 players gathered for a synchronized raid against Mega Mewtwo Y, recreating the climactic Mewtwo battle from the game’s original 2015 launch trailer.

Pokémon Go has now been around for a full decade, and Mewtwo is arguably one of the most fitting Pokémon the game could use to mark the occasion.

The original trailer famously ended with Trainers coming together to battle Mewtwo. Ten years later, the game finally recreated that moment in Times Square, with Mega Mewtwo Y taking center stage. Now, instead of simply watching Mewtwo dominate the anniversary celebrations, Trainers can take one home.
