Pokémon GO is changing how players can earn PokéCoins

Earn PokéCoins in multiple new ways (Picture: Niantic)

Pokémon GO continues to change and evolve in an effort to help make the game playable indoors, as we're all under the coronavirus lockdown.

The social nature of Pokémon GO has been drastically changed in response to the outbreak, making it so that you can enjoy most of what the game has to offer while being indoors.

A big feature of the game is the gym battles, which help you earn PokéCoins, the in-game currency used to buy cosmetics and other supplies from the store.

In a blog post, Niantic explains it is looking to help players earn PokéCoins by doing different activities besides defending gyms.

This update will first be tested in Australia before being rolled out on a more global scale.

In order to balance this new method of earning PokéCoins, the number of PokéCoins earned from defending gyms will be reduced from six per hour to two.

The maximum number of PokéCoins you can earn in a day will be increased to 55.

Here are some of the daily activities you'll be able to earn PokéCoins by completing.

  • Make an Excellent Throw
  • Evolve a Pokémon
  • Make a Great Throw
  • Use a berry to help catch a Pokémon
  • Take a snapshot of your buddy
  • Catch a Pokémon
  • Power up a Pokémon
  • Make a Nice Throw
  • Transfer a Pokémon
  • Win a raid

Completing each of these activities, or some variations of them at least will net you five PokéCoins.

There's a limit on how many coins you can earn in a day. Completing all the activities listed here, for example, would give you 50 coins in total.

Once the initial rollout starts in Australia, Niantic will collect feedback and perform additional testing based on the results. We hope these features will come to the UK too, but we'll have to wait and see.
