Poisonous algae at Rutland water closes the beach for bank holiday weekend

A popular beach just an hour away from Nottingham is closed over the Bank Holiday weekend due to poisonous algae.

It has been closed due to high levels of Blue Green Algae which is particularly dangerous to dogs.

The Blue Cross charity says that the algae can be fatal for dogs.

It said: "Sadly, exposure to toxic blue-green algae is often fatal, and can also cause long term health problems in dogs that survive after drinking or swimming in algae-contaminated water.

"Some types of blue-green algae can kill a dog just 15 minutes to an hour after drinking contaminated water."

In a post on the Rutland water Facebook page, they said: "Sykes Lane Beach will be closed this weekend including Monday due to continued high levels of Blue Green Algae

"This is a localised closure due to the prevailing wind and as such Aqua Park Rutland and Rutland Watersports remain open along with all shore based activities.

"We are sorry for the inconvenience this causes to bank holiday plans however we must put our visitors health first."

Aqua Park Rutland and Rutland Watersports remain open as usual.
