Points win for Australian boxer Garside

Lightweight boxer Harry Garside has started his Olympics campaign with a unanimous points victory. (AAP)

Australian lightweight Harry Garside began his Olympics campaign with a unanimous points victory over Papua New Guinea's John Ume.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist dominated from the start at the Kokugikan Arena in Tokyo, although he was stung by a powerful first-round shot from the stocky Ume.

Garside briefly wobbled before regathering his composure and impressing during the lively exchanges.

The 24-year-old from Melbourne blends ballet into his boxing training and he was certainly light on his feet as he moved around Ume.

Garside worked skilful combinations to Ume's body and head to impress the five ringside judges.

Ume kept coming forward and showed plenty of bravery but Garside dominated at range and won 30-28 on all five scorecards.

Garside faces second seed Jonas Jonas, from Namibia, in his next bout.
