Poignant last post of tragic mum killed in house fire with two children

A moving social media message posted by a mum in the days leading up to her death in a fire has shown her love for dogs.

Gemma Germeney, 31, was tragically killed in her home in the early hours of Friday after a blaze - believed to have been started when an e-bike caught fire - tore through her Cambridge flat.

Her two children, Oliver Peden, four, and Lilly Peden, eight, later died in hospital.

While the children's father - Scott Peden, in his 30s - remains in a critical condition after he desperately tried to rescue his family from the building.

It is believed that the family's two dogs were also killed in the fire.

Since the devastating event, a Facebook post by Gemma only days before the fire has been revealed, reports The Sun.

In it, a photo of a dog is show alongside the canine cartoon character Snoopy.

An accompanying caption reads: "Always take care of your dog. Even if your world falls apart, he will still be there for you."

A neighbour who witnessed the tragedy unfold at around 1am on June 30 said: "I was woken up by what I thought was a car alarm, but it must have been a smoke alarm going off.

"There was smoke billowing everywhere and I could see flames, and hear the sounds of windows smashing.

"I didn’t realise how serious it was until I saw some stretchers being wheeled out. It was absolutely horrific."

Cambridge Fire and Rescue Service has since concluded its investigation and it is thought that the fire was accidental and was most likely caused by an e-bike.

A spokesperson said on Monday: “It is believed that the fire started accidentally and the most probable cause was an e-bike.

Area Commander Stuart Smith said: “Fire service and specialist fire investigators, together with police forensic teams and a fire dog, have spent the weekend carrying out a thorough investigation of the maisonette.

“A fire investigation looks for the most probable cause and in this case, we believe that to be an electric bike that was charging."

The service has since issued advice, urging people to avoid charging the battery of an e-bike or e-scooter overnight.

It added that these modes of transport must also not be left to charge for any longer than is necessary.
