Splendid and venerable the Poetry Society indisputably is, but for years now it's been selling itself awfully short online. While its site has always housed plenty of good content (a fabulous clickable map of the UK's poetry landmarks, with links to everything from venues in Newcastle to bookshops in Wales; an indispensable list of upcoming publications), its delivery, up til now, has been clunky, creaky and lacking in style.
No longer. The Society has spent the last few months engaging in an orgy of streamlining, reorganizing and polishing, and the result was unveiled today: a clean, clear, informative and well designed site; bright, navigable and chock-full of info on everything from membership, events and education initiatives to the menu at Covent Garden's marvellous Poetry Café. It's well worth checking out if you have a moment.
What with this, the first anniversary of the Poetry Archive and the fact that we can't get enough of learning by heart, poetry seems to be having a bit of a moment in the sun right now - and frankly, who's complaining?
