CHENNAI: A heritage house on Veerasamy Street at Seven Wells, where 19th century saint Vallalar lived, is under renovation.
The state government has extended its support for the initiative. Located in the heart of the city, the building is currently maintained by a private trust.
Hindu religious and charitable endowments (HR and CE) minister P K Sekar Babu on Sunday visited the house of Ramalinga Adigalar, who is known as Vallalar. He said that the blueprint for constructing a memorial for Vallalar on a 72-acre plot at Vadalur (in Cuddalore district) is being prepared. “Moreover, Vallalar's house (in Chennai), where he had lived, is under renovation. The state government will extend all its support for the purpose," he said.
A saint belonging to the 19th century, Vallalar, who authored ‘Thiruvarutpa’, spent about 33 years in this house since 1825. D M Sripathi, an administrator of the trust that maintains the house said that Vallalar was brought by his close relative as a toddler to this rented house in the 19th century. “He stayed on the first floor and delivered spiritual discourses. Vallalar wrote 5 out of the 6 'Thirumurai' from this house,” he added. According to him, the renovation began 20 days ago.
