It’s unclear how much cap space the New England Patriots have, after re-signing Cam Newton on an incentive-laden deal and trading for Trent Brown and restructuring his contract, among other transactions.
Prior to those moves, New England had $65 million in cap space. And while Brown can make up to $13 million and Newton can make up to $14 million, it’s probable their contracts will have much smaller impacts on the cap.
So New England will still be in a huge position of power in 2021 free agency. The free agency market is flooded with talented players as most teams trim their rosters to get under the salary cap, which decreased for the first time in years because of the COVID-19 pandemic. With so many talented players and so few teams that can spend money, New England is free to target talent with relative ease.
