Pod of killer whale surprise two fishermen in tiny boat off coast of Shetland

This is the astonishing moment a pod of Orca surprised two Shetland fishermen.

Piet Steenkamp and pal Donald Gordon were stunned to see the beautiful creatures cruise past their tiny boat on Friday afternoon.

The friends were fishing off Levenwick, Shetland when the amazing encounter happened.

Piet’s wife, Niki, said: “They were absolutely blown away by what happened. There’s been a lot of Orca activity around the island over the past few months and it was great to see them up so close.

“There’s been a lot of mackerel in the area so we think they were in looking for a bite to eat.”

At one point the large dorsal fin of what Niki said was a large bull Orca slides within feet of the 13ft-long boat.

But at no stage did the fishermen feel in any danger.

The pod of about six or seven animals were going about their daily adventures without a care in the world and quickly swam off into the distance.

Niki and Piet own the Voortrekker Apartments, in Levenwick, that includes three self-contained holiday flats.

Since the stunning video was posted on Friday it has been viewed nearly 250,000 times and attracted more than 750 comments from around the world.
