Pod of around 15 dolphins seen doing acrobatics off Porthcawl in amazing pictures

A pod of dolphins have been spotted in Porthcawl. At least 15 dolphins were seen in the area at the time, leaping through the air and splashing around in the water.

An RNLI rescuer, Stephen Jones, managed to get his camera out just in the nick of time to capture the impressive sight on camera. The dolphins were spotted just off Newton Point, Trecco Bay, Rhych Point and Sandy Bay on Saturday, June 18.

It was only by a stroke of luck that Stephen and his wife managed to see them at the right time. Stephen was out on his small boat on Saturday and once he caught sight of them, he became intent on capturing as many images as he could to share the amazing moment with other people.

Stephen told WalesOnline: “I’ve seen them in and around Porthcawl quite a bit over the past couple of years, sometimes in quite big pods. This was exciting because there were at least 15 of them altogether.

“We usually just go out for pleasure. I usually take my camera just to take pictures of Porthcawl from a different perspective. The dolphin pods just happened to be passing us as we were making our way back to the Marina. We are always amazed to see them, especially when they breach and break the water. They can be really acrobatic at times.

“The pod we saw passed the boat within 300 metres at a leisurely pace but when they reached Sandy Bay by Coney Beach they really started going off at speed and coming right out of the water.”

The keen photographer has been lucky enough to spot dolphins in the area more than once as time has gone on. Last year, Stephen spotted a pod in the same area again between Newton beach and Porthcawl pier, so the impressive sea creatures are clearly big fans of the area.
