Pocky, a stick confectionery manufactured by Ezaki Glico Co., was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world's best-selling biscuit coated in chocolate in 2019, the company announced on Tuesday.
The confection is sold in 30 countries and regions -- including the United States, China and Singapore -- with annual sales of about 590 million dollars (about 62 billion yen).
Pocky was launched in Japan in 1966 and has since expanded overseas, beginning in Thailand in 1972. The chocolate-coated biscuit stick is popular with customers as the company has created a wider variety of flavors for the products and used different cacao varieties to suit local climate and preferences depending on where the Pocky is sold.
In 2014, the company almost unified the trade names that had been different in each country or region into "Pocky." The 2019 record does not include European products sold under the trade name "Mikado."
