Pochettino return, Arsenal away - 5 fixtures that will shape Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham season

Ange Postecoglou will start his Tottenham tenure with a trip across the capital on the opening weekend of the Premier League season. Spurs will kick off the 2023/24 campaign by travelling to the Gtech Community Stadium to take on Thomas Frank's Brentford.

A tricky game for the Lilywhites with the Bees going very strong under the Dane in the Premier League, Spurs will be hoping it is third time lucky in west London after drawing both of their games at Brentford since their promotion from the Championship. A fast start is a must for Postecoglou, especially with some fans questioning the appointment of the Australian following the departure of Antonio Conte.

Now that the 2023/24 schedule is set in stone, what are the games that could shape Tottenham's season? football.london takes a look below.

Sunday, August 13 - Brentford vs Tottenham

Postecoglou will be determined to make his mark in the Premier League on the opening weekend by guiding Tottenham to three points. Patience is going to be required as he looks to implement his football philosophy but the hope is that the players will be able to take it on board very quickly indeed.

Three points and an eye-catching performance would go down extremely well and hopefully see the Australian win many over. It won't be straightforward at all, though, with Brentford very impressive at home and making big strides under Frank.

Saturday, September 23 - Arsenal vs Tottenham

The first North London Derby of the season takes place towards the end of September as Tottenham visit the Emirates. Put to the sword by their rivals in both games last term, Tottenham will be out for revenge against Mikel Arteta's men

Spurs have not fared well at the home of their rivals and Postecoglou has a huge chance to try and change that. Tottenham will send out a real statement of intent if they beat Arsenal playing the Australian's exciting brand of football.

Saturday, November 4 - Tottenham vs Chelsea

Four years on from his Tottenham exit, the start of November will see Mauricio Pochettino return to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the very first time. Spurs did get the better of their fierce rivals back in February and they will be hoping to keep it that way this time around.

The Blues will be an entirely different beast under Pochettino, though, and this should be a very interesting game indeed. Again, Postecoglou has another real opportunity to make his mark at Tottenham in the Premier League.

Saturday, April 20 - Tottenham vs Man City

Pep Guardiola will be praying that Man City's dire run at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will finally come to an end towards the end of April. Losing all their games in N17 since the club's new stadium opened its doors for the first time in 2019, the treble winners have yet to score in that time either.

It really could be a pivotal game in Tottenham's season as the showdown comes during a very tricky run of games for the Lilywhites. The fixture comes after a trip to Newcastle United and before a home clash vs Arsenal and away game at Liverpool.

Tottenham really need to pick up a win against City as the points could be hard to come by in the other matches.

Sunday, May 19 - Sheffield United vs Tottenham

With the race for European spots going down to the wire for Tottenham in each of the past few seasons, the same could very well happen once again in 2023/24. Spurs will bring down the curtain on the campaign with a tough away game at Sheffield United, who potentially could be fighting to stay up on the final day following their promotion back to the Premier League.

Suffering an embarrassing defeat in South Yorkshire at the start of March as they exited the FA Cup, Tottenham need to put things right at Bramall Lane. The encounter could prove decisive to where Tottenham finish in the Premier League table as they look to secure a return to the Champions League after one year away.
