PNC to convert 14 Chicago-area branches to new format

Feb. 02--PNC Bank, which last spring brought its "branch of the future" to the Old Town neighborhood, will convert 14 additional locations in the Chicago area to the new setup by the end of March.

Such locations have no visible teller windows or line, but feature "discovery bars" reminiscent of the setup in Apple stores. Bank branch employees use a tablet or computer to teach customers about mobile or online banking. The branches also have smarter ATMs that can dispense bills as small as $1.

The 14 offices are part of 21 local branches that are among the first at PNC to offer instant card issuance services; customers who open a new account or who need a new debit card can leave with a new card in hand.

Pittsburgh-based PNC is in the process of updating more than 300 branches nationwide. It has about 150 branches in the Chicago area.

The Chicago branches to be renovated are: 401 N. LaSalle St.; 4201 N. Lincoln Ave.; 55 W. Monroe St.; 1 N. Franklin St.; 700 N. State St.; 100 W. Randolph St.; and 1640 W. Fullerton Ave.

Two Mount Prospect branches also will be converted: 935 N. Elmhurst Road and 1800 S. Elmhurst Road.

Palatine will see two of the new branches: 515 N. Hicks Road and 720 E. Dundee Road.

Other branches being changed: 606 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg; 2810 S. Highland Ave., Lombard; and 3879 E. Main St., St. Charles.

A PNC Bank spokesman said no layoffs would occur in the branches being renovated.
