Boris Johnson is the “worst possible prime minister at the worst possible time”, Sir Keir Starmer said, as he told the Commons that Labour had “shown the leadership he lacked” over the Plan B vote.
The prime minister was accused of “lacking the moral authority to lead” after 100 backbenchers defied him on new Covid measures, which passed with the support of the Labour party.
Sir Keir said: “The Labour party showed the leadership that the PM lacked. If it wasn’t for Labour votes, his government wouldn’t have been able to introduce vital public health measures.
“So weak is his leadership that his own MPs voted against public health measures.”
The revolt came despite a personal appeal from Mr Johnson to his MPs just an hour before the vote on Tuesday evening.
Nearly a third of his MPs voted against the introduction of mandatory Covid passes in nightclubs and large venues, with many saying they were unhappy about the way Mr Johnson was leading the country and his party.
