PMQs: Corbyn slams Tories for 'promoting private GPs' as NHS doctors plummet

Jeremy Corbyn has accused Tory ministers of "promoting private GPs" while NHS GP numbers see their first sustained fall for 50 years.

The Labour leader lashed out today at Prime Minister's Questions after research showed the number of GPs per 100,000 people fell from 65 in 2014 to 60 last year.

By comparison, he said, Health Secretary Matt Hancock has sung the praises of privately-run health app Babylon.

Labour's leader fumed: "The Conservative Secretary of State, whilst promoting private GP services, at the same time is overseeing the biggest drop in NHS GPs for 50 years.

"One in 10 GPs are now seeing twice as many patients as it is safe for them to do so. That is the pressure they're under."

He added: "Will the PM on behalf of the government apologise to the tens of thousands of people waiting for too long in deep distress just to get seen at an A&E department?"

PMQs: Theresa May's statistics attack on Corbyn backfires as she uses disputed claim herself

Mr Corbyn warned the Government's "failures" are "taking their toll" on the NHS, with a staff survey finding 40% reported work-related stress in the last year.

He described the NHS as "Labour's greatest achievement" adding: "Every Tory MP voted against it."

Mr Corbyn said under Labour funding had risen by 6% a year, but under the Tories "it has barely reached 1.5%".

He said 5,000 nurses from the EU had left in the past two years and there are 100,00 staff vacancies across the health service in England, asking: "What is the Prime Minister doing to remedy this dangerous situation?"

Mrs May hit back, saying the "numbers of doctors and nurses in the NHS is at the highest level in its 70-year history", and accused the Labour leader of "talking down the NHS".

He angrily hit back, saying: "Nobody on this side of the House ever talks down the NHS, it's Labour's achievement."

Mrs May said: "For too long, governments have failed to produce the proper workforce planning to give our staff in the NHS the care that they deserve.

"It is this Government with its long-term plan that is ensuring we are giving that care to staff."

Mr Corbyn said on World Ovarian Cancer Day figures showed in February a quarter of patients waited two months for treatment after a GP referral, the "worst performance on record", asking Mrs May to "apologise to those cancer patients facing weeks of almost unbelievable stress and worry whilst they are waiting to start their treatment".

The PM said the Government "recognises the importance of early diagnosis", which she said was a key part of their NHS long-term plan.

But Mr Corbyn said GPs are "often ones who play a vital role in that", but today's figures have showed the first drop in numbers in NHS history, with a third of people unable to urgent appointments due to the shortage of doctors.

“I’m proud of this government’s and the Conservative Party’s record on the NHS,": Mrs May said.

“It’s the Conservative Party that’s giving it a sustainable, long term 10 year plan."

The Tory Health Secretary was accused of breaking ethics rules last year after he heaped praise on a private health firm.

Matt Hancock hailed the Babylon GP At Hand app in an interview in the Evening Standard (Leon Neal)

Matt Hancock hailed the Babylon GP At Hand app in an interview in the Evening Standard, saying he had it on his phone.

The article was printed "in association with" Babylon, which matches patients to NHS GPs for free - and offers a £9.99-a-month premium service.

A source insisted Mr Hancock - a former aide to Tory George Osborne, who now edits the newspaper - did not know the article was going to be sponsored by Babylon until it was published.

But Labour reported the Cabinet minister to Theresa May in November and demanded an "urgent investigation".
