Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha was briefed late Monday about the discovery of the boys in the cave, and wished the footballers and coach "safe and speedy recovery", according to his deputy spokesman.

Maj Gen Weerachon Sukhonthapatipak said Gen Prayut's immediate response was that, "We all wish the football team a safe and speedy recovery."

He made special mention of the foreign teams and volunteers involved in the 10-day search for the Chiang Rai youngsters and their coach.

"Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha wishes to thank the tremendous efforts of all international units that have come to assist the Thai authorities in rescuing the youth football team that was stuck in the caves in Chiang Rai," he added.

The boys and their trainer were found on Monday night on high ground about 400 metres from Pattya beach in the cave.
