PM pushes deeper Indonesia relations

Thailand and Indonesia signed four agreements on Tuesday covering tourism, carbon markets and economic cooperation during Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's official two-day visit to Jakarta, the first by a Thai premier in 15 years.

Mr Anutin witnessed the exchange of the pacts, which include tourism promotions between the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Indonesian partners Traveloka and TransNusa airline.

They also feature carbon market and broader economic cooperation agreements between the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin).

The Thai premier later attended a ceremony marking the official renaming of Indonesia's Maspion Bank to PT Bank Kasikorn Indonesia Tbk. Officials said the investment builds a stronger regional presence for Thailand's financial sector.

Addressing a business forum, Mr Anutin urged both nations to move beyond traditional trading and integrate manufacturing, investment and technology. He highlighted Thailand's role as a manufacturing hub complementing Indonesia's massive consumer market.

Following talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Mr Anutin proposed deeper cooperation in food security, digital payments via PromptPay and Indonesia's QRIS system, and clean energy to support electric vehicles and data centres.

With bilateral trade approaching US$20 billion (668 billion baht), the two governments aim to increase the figure to US$23 billion, capitalising on a combined population of over 350 million people.
