PM promises to get Indigenous council input on education overhaul proposal

The Prime Minister's Indigenous Advisory Council has received a commitment from Scott Morrison that Tony Abbott's proposal to overhaul the Indigenous education system would first be put to the Indigenous council for consultation.

Mr Morrison met with his Indigenous Advisory Council for the first time this week, saying employment was high on the agenda.

The co-chair of the council Roy Ah-See told the ABC the council would act like a check on any proposals put forward that would have a substantial impact on Indigenous children's lives.

"[I'm] very pleased that the PM has committed to this process, because at the end of the day Aboriginal people are the experts when it comes to Aboriginal affairs," he told the ABC.

"We understand the frustration in our communities, however with this arrangement we can have input in to any recommendations that go to the PM.

"This arrangement will allow the council to keep him honest and ask the hard questions if we need to."

The Prime Minister has previously said Mr Abbott will do a "cracker" of a job as Indigenous envoy, given his passion for the Aboriginal community.

"I want him to be able to free rein on this," Mr Morrison said.

"I don't want him to be constrained … as a minister trying to defend Government policy and all this sort of thing."

He has said he appointed Mr Abbott to the envoy role because getting children an education was one of the most important ways to combat Indigenous disadvantage.
