PM Modi lands in Sweden, set to meet Kristersson & EU chief Ursula von der Leyen

Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Sweden on Sunday, where he is set to hold discussions on trade, technology, defence and some other key sectors. Marking the third leg of his international trip, he will meet his Swedish counterpart, Ulf Kristersson, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

The prime minister’s aircraft was escorted by Swedish Air Force jets while landing in Gothenburg. He was given a warm welcome at the airport by Kristersson.

India-Sweden bilateral trade reached $7.75 billion in 2025. The two sides are now set to focus on boosting bilateral ties in areas of green transition, AI, emerging technologies, startups, resilient supply chains, defence, space, climate action and people-to-people ties.

Modi had earlier visited Sweden in 2018 for the first-ever India-Nordic Summit.

"The two prime ministers will also address the European Round Table for Industry, a leading pan-European business leaders forum, along with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission," the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement earlier.

“I will be meeting Prime Minister Kristersson with the aim of advancing the India-Sweden friendship in trade, investments, innovation, defence and more,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

He further said, “With PM Kristersson and President of the European Commission, Ms. Ursula von der Leyen, I will be meeting European business leaders at the European Business Round Table for Industry. This will also deepen investment linkages between India and Europe."

Sharing glimpses of his arrival in Sweden, Modi said, "I’m grateful to Prime Minister Kristersson for the special gesture of coming to receive me at Gothenburg airport. Looking forward to boosting India-Sweden friendship in this important visit."

Later this week, he will also visit Norway and Italy.
