PM Modi compliments AIIMS Bhubaneswar for quadruple joint replacement surgery

BHUBANESWAR: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated doctors of AIIMS Bhubaneswar for a quadruple joint replacement surgery, which the national institution claimed as the second such case globally.

The surgery was conducted in a crippled patient.

“Compliments to our doctors for always being at the forefront of innovation and embracing new changes in the medical world. Their dexterity makes us proud,” said Modi quoting a tweet from AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

Official sources said only one case has been reported from AIIMS Delhi in which an Odia patient was operated with all four joint replacements in one setting.

“This is the second case to be reported globally and first of its kind in Odisha,” said an official statement of the AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

A team of doctors — including Mantu Jain and Sritam Swarup Jena led by additional professor of orthopaedics department Sujit Kumar Tripathy — had conducted a quadruple joint replacement surgery on a 37-year-old crippled patient from Aul block of Kendrapada district.

The patient was suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and was on numerous medications.

She was crippled due to severe arthritic involvements of the hips and knees.

There were no movements in the hip joints and she had very little movement in both the knees.

She needed replacement surgeries of all four joints, said Tripathy.

The operation was completed in three hours.

The patient started walking on the third day and was happy with the outcomes.

“Getting a compliment from the Prime Minister is a big thing for us. It will encourage us to do well in future and continue serving the patients of the region,” said Tripathy.

Union health minister Manuskh Mandaviya and Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan also complimented the work of the national institution.

“Kudos to the team of doctors! AIIMS Bhubaneswar is redefining healthcare and is emerging as a centre-of-excellence for quality healthcare services in Odisha and eastern India,” said Pradhan on Sunday.

Mandaviya on Sunday said, “Adding another feather to its cap, AIIMS Bhubaneswar has conducted successful quadruple joint replacement surgery on a crippled patient free of cost. First of its kind in Odisha, the second case reported globally. Congratulations to the team of doctors for this remarkable feat.”
