Former Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah on Monday appealed for complete social distancing on the demise of his uncle Muhammad Ali Matoo, earning him the praise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“My uncle passed away after a brief illness. At this difficult time the family appeals to everyone to respect the guidelines to not gather either at his residence or the graveyard. Your prayers from your homes will give peace to his soul,” advised Mr. Abdullah in a tweet.
His message was appreciated by Mr. Modi. In his condolence message he wrote: “Condolences to you and the entire family. May his soul rest in peace. In this hour of grief, your call to avoid any large gathering is appreciable and will strengthen India’s fight against COVID-19.”
Mr. Abdullah thanked the Prime Minister for his message. “Your prayers for the departed soul are much appreciated,” he said.
This is the first exchange of messages between Mr. Abdullah and Mr. Modi since the former was detained on August 5 last year, just as the Centre revoked J&K’s special status.
Mr. Abdullah was released on March 24 after 232 days of detention. He has limited his activities to fighting the spread of the pandemic in J&K and has asked his supporters too to do so.
