Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Tuesday gave financial rewards to successful athletes, as well as their coaches and associations, at the Asian Games, Asian Para Games and Youth Olympics.
Using money from the National Sports Development Fund, Gen Prayut handed them a total of 401 million baht in bonus during a reception at Government House.
Present at the function were Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon, who is also president of the Olympic Committee of Thailand, Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowrurat and Sports Authority of Thailand governor Gongsak Yodmanee.
The Asian Games contingent received a total of 268.45 million baht.
They returned from Indonesia with 11 gold, 16 silver and 46 bronze medals.
The tally was well below their pre-tournament target of 17 gold medals. The Thais were 12th overall, also missing their aim of a top-six finish.
At the 2014 Asian Games, Thailand claimed 12 titles and finished sixth overall.
Among the Thai champions at Jakarta-Palembang 2018 included sepak takraw stars who claimed four titles, taekwondo fighter Panipak Wongpattanakit, skeet shooter Sutiya Jiewchaloemmit and cyclist Jai Angsuthasawit.
The Asian Para Games squad got 105.75 million baht from winning 23 gold, 33 silver and 50 bronze medals.
Thailand took home five gold, five silver and two bronze medals from the Youth Olympics in Argentina.
The medallists, along with their coaches and associations, received 27 million baht.
The Thai winners in Buenos Aires are boxers Atichai Phoemsap and Panpatchara Somnuek, taekwondo fighter Kanthida Saengsin, weightlifter Supatchanin Khamhaeng, and golfers Atthaya Thitikul and Vanchai Luangnitikul in the mixed team event.
Each received two million baht in bonus from the National Sports Development Fund.
Thailand's next multi-sports tournaments are the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines and 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
