PM Boris Johnson to address the nation tomorrow in Covid update

Boris Johnson will hold a press conference on Wednesday afternoon to update the public on the coronavirus pandemic, it has been confirmed.

The focus of the update will be statistical, with Downing Street currently saying it will not be to deliver a "specific set of new announcements".

The press conference will see the Prime Minister joined by England's chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty and chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance.

The news comes after the global number of coronavirus deaths topped one million.

The Prime Minister's official spokesman said: "The purpose of that is to provide an update on the latest statistics. It is not because there is some specific set of new announcements to make."

It will take place in the afternoon but Number 10 says it will not confirm a time until tomorrow.

Mr Johnson, when asked whether he stood by the 10pm hospitality curfew, said: "What I would say about hospitality - no one wants to impose a curfew or a limit of any kind but you've got to look at the spread of this disease and that it is spread by human contact.

"I'm afraid the hospitality sector is an obvious place of transmission of coronavirus.

"We have to get it down and that's what we're doing, that's what the country is again doing together."

He added: "I would draw a distinction between what is happening now and what happened in March - in no way is this the same as the lockdown in March.

"The crucial thing is that, by our collective action, we are allowing hospitality to keep going - hospitality is not being shut down."

This follows reports in the national press yesterday suggesting our region is one of the places where new restrictions, including a complete ban on social meetings and a two week shutdown of the hospitality sector, could be announced this week if case numbers in the city continue to grow.

The number of deaths involving Covid-19 registered in England and Wales has risen for the second week in a row.

A total of 139 deaths registered in the week ending September 18 mentioned Covid-19 on the death certificate, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

This is up from 99 deaths in the week to September 11, and 78 deaths in the week to September 4.
