Plush Edinburgh city centre restaurant wants to install dining pod on roof overlooking castle

A Thai restaurant in Edinburgh's New Town want to install a unique dining pod on their roof to offer diners a special view of the castle.

The Chaophrya restaurant on Castle Street already has a rooftop terrace and now they want to create the glazed pod to offer diners views across the capital as they enjoy their meal.

The eatery is already renowned for its special views of the capital, with the large windows on the rooftop terrace, looking directly onto the famous castle.

But the pod's canopy will be approximately 2.2 metre above the existing fifth floor roof terrace and will create a truly one off dining experience.

The City of Edinburgh Council validated the proposal from Thai Leisure Group on Monday October 18.

Thai Leisure own the Chaophraya restaurant and say on the planning application that the pods is “important in securing it’s future in both terms of an ongoing successful enterprise but also to preserve the continued use of this non-designated heritage asset as a public house and restaurant.”

The planning application shows that the pod is roughly four metres long and two metres high.

Chaophraya was created by life and business partners Khun Kim and Martin, who set up in the UK after the success of their street food stalls in Bangkok.

Today they have restaurants in Aberdeen, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds and Newcastle.

The property is category B listed, located within the New Town Conservation Area and is part of the Edinburgh UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The council are expected to make a decision on the planning application in the coming weeks.
