Plush Ayrshire care home with its very own bar, cafe and hairdressers, is given seal of approval from the Care Inspectorate

A plush Ayrshire care home which features its own bar, cafe and hairdressing facilities has sailed through an unannounced spot-check by the Care Inspectorate.

Queens View Harbour Luxury Suites, based in Troon’s Templehill, was graded ‘very good’ in four categories and ‘good’ in another.

The care home provides nursing and residential care for up to 56 people and is laid out over three floors.

The ground floor provides a variety of communal facilities, including a cafe, bar, hairdresser, family dining room and sleepover room for visitors.

In making their evaluations of the service the Care Inspectorate spoke with 10 people using the service and six of their family, liaised with 16 staff and management, reviewed documents and observed practice and daily life.

According to the Care Inspectorate the home had a strong culture of person-centred care that made people feel “valued” and “promoted” their choices and abilities.

The home was “well designed” and contained a variety of “useful facilities,” and there were “very good” infection prevention and control practices to help to keep people “safe and healthy.”

In addition, leaders promoted “clear values” and good practice by being “very involved” in people’s daily care.

Leadership, staffing, setting and the home’s ability to support people’s wellbeing were all graded ‘very good’ and the planning of care and support graded ‘good.’

An extract from the Care Inspectorate report said: “We found significant strengths in aspects of the care provided and how these supported positive outcomes for people.

“People experienced respectful, attentive and compassionate care that made them feel valued and included.”

One resident said: “I never regretted my choice to come here. Staff are always friendly and nothing is ever too much for them.”

Mealtimes were “well organised” and encouraged people to use their own abilities whilst ensuring that "gentle support" was at hand “when needed.”

And technology was also available to keep people “in touch” with family and friends who lived far away, or were not able to visit.

The scrutiny body also noted that bedrooms and communal areas were “clean, tidy and well maintained” with the report adding: “The very good state of cleanliness was supported by robust cleaning procedures and quality assurance.

“Staff were competent and aware of the risks of infection. We saw that staff practice followed current guidance for infection prevention and control. This helped to keep people safe and healthy.”

Ayrshire Live previously told how the care home, which opened just 12 months ago, shot to the top of the industry’s gold standard.

Queens View Harbour secured top spot in Scotland after a vote by residents and their families.

The award, based on written submissions, saw more than 1,000 homes across the country vying for recognition from review body carehome.co.uk

Homes were rated on a range of factors from overall standard to food and drink and value for money.

More than 87,000 reviews were received from residents and their family and friends between July 2020 and June 2022.
