Plush Ayr park under attack by angry wasps after mum is repeatedly stung by huge swarm

A plush Ayrshire park is under attack from swarms of angry wasps after several visitors were left stung.

Rozelle Estate in Ayr has become home to the yellow-striped pests with a huge nest being reported near to the pond at the popular Alloway beauty spot.

Last week a mum was left with dozens of nasty stings after being ambushed by at least 40 of the insects who also targeted her friend.

Cheryl Smith called on council teams to tackle the nests after the traumatic attack on Friday left her with swelling on both her legs.

Despite wearing jeans, the wasps managed to sting through the denim material piercing into her skin.

Cheryl, 48, told Ayrshire Live: “I live in Alloway and use the park all the time.

“On Friday I went out for a walk with my friend, we walked along towards the war memorial bit which has the pond on the other side.

“We decided to run in that direction and went towards the pond but off to the left, we were running along a trail I was out in front.

“As we approached we could hear a woman properly screaming, ‘no, no’.

“I never even noticed them at first. I just remember hearing my friend screaming telling me to come out.

“We were just covered in them — they were everywhere.

“We would have looked like something out of a comedy sketch trying to batter them off of us.

“They somehow got through my jeans and all down my legs. We never found this woman and her voice stopped very suddenly – but we can only assume it because of the wasps.

“We barely managed to walk back home. I was in so much pain. My legs have been really red and swollen."

Cheryl took to social media to warn other users of the nest.

The mum-of-four warned park runners who were set to use the trail at their event on the Saturday to avoid the area.

Since then, other users of the park have complained of wasp incidents.

In another alarming post, a dog walker claims to have had their dog stung by a hornet with fears over a hornets nest in the park also raised.

Cheryl added: “Something definitely has to be done – I’ve never known the park to be this bad for wasps.

“I would really worry for a young child going there or even someone’s dog off of a leash.

“I had noticed that someone’s dog had to be taken to the vets after being stung by a hornet which is really concerning as hornets are meant to be worse than wasps.”

A South Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “We are in the process of checking the Remembrance Woodland at Rozelle, and we will take action to ensure the wasps are no longer a danger.”
