KOCHI: The model exams for Plus Two students began in the state on Wednesday, but many teachers were skeptical whether it would serve the intended purpose of helping students to prepare for the board exams. They said that though academic activities are going as per the government’s schedule, the effectiveness of learning is an issue of concern as most schools completed the portions just for the sake of it due to lack of time.
The model exams, which are supposed to be a trial exam before the board exams, are being done in a two-exams-per-day schedule instead of one exam daily. Teachers said that effective revision did not take place in most schools and conducting the model exam in a hurried manner will not be of any use for the students other than familiarizing with the question pattern.
S Manoj, state general secretary of Aided Higher Secondary Teachers Association (AHSTA), said that the number of working days was limited and most schools had to complete the portions in a hurried manner through online and offline classes. Most core subjects like Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics did not get enough classes to cover topics in depth.
Anil M George, state general secretary of Departmental Higher Secondary School Teachers Association (HSSTA) said that revision was not done in most schools. “Completing the portions somehow was the priority for teachers. Students’ performance in exams might be affected due to this,” he said.
