BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. _ The big trend on the 74th Golden Globes red carpet Sunday was, well, golden. The stars arriving in golden garb were matched by almost as many in silver, making sparkly metallics one of the night's top looks.
Among the standouts on the red carpet at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills were Kerry Washington in a Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda gown, Priyanka Chopra in a custom Ralph Lauren Collection hand-embroidered evening dress (the result of 1,600 hours of hand-sewing gold sequins and glass beads) and Sarah Paulson in a gold lace-embellished, open-back Marc Jacobs gown with rolling waves of sparkling gold and silver sequins.
The march of metallics continued with a silver-clad sisterhood that included "Loving's" Ruth Negga in a sea of silver sequins (courtesy of Louis Vuitton), "Stranger Things'" Millie Bobby Brown (in Jenny Packham), Regina King in a Romona Keveza Collection platinum beaded asymmetrical mermaid gown, and Gina Rodriguez in a sparkling silver Naeem Khan gown.
Rodriguez and Chopra were also among the celebrities who keyed into the night's other major trend: necklines that plunged nearly to the navel, threatening a wardrobe malfunction with every footfall. Other women who gave the sternum more than its fair share of daylight at the Golden Globes were Jessica Biel in a sleeveless gown from the fall/winter 2016 Elie Saab Haute Couture collection, Kristen Bell in a plunging sequin Jenny Packham outfit, Emily Ratajkowski in a yellow gown with antique stone detail by Reem Acra, Mandy Moore in a black Naeem Khan gown that made up for the lack of fabric in the front with a gauzy cape that flowed out behind her and Busy Philipps in Stella McCartney.
Lily Collins hit the red carpet in one of the standout fairy-tale gowns of the night, a pink A-line dress and cape ensemble from the fall 2016 Zuhair Murad Couture collection that was showered in sparkly beading. The color of the gown (described as "rosewood pink") was part of the Globes' other big color takeaways. Pale shades of pink were worn by Carrie Underwood (in a floral blossom of a gown by Iris van Herpen) and Emma Stone (in a pink Valentino gown festooned with silver stars).
There were also a couple of notable menswear looks. And two of the most memorable happened to be worn by women: Octavia Spencer in a custom suit by Laura Basci, and Evan Rachel Wood, who turned out in a black custom-made peak-lapel Altuzarra tuxedo with a white waistcoat, white silk blouse and generous white bow at the neck.
Other menswear moments came by way of Milo Ventimiglia (who told Ryan Seacrest that his navy blue Ralph Lauren Purple Label shawl-collar tuxedo "moved liked smoke"), Donald Glover (in a tobacco-colored velvet two-button Gucci suit) and Ryan Gosling, who made his white Gucci tuxedo jacket look classy as all get out.
