Plumes of smoke seen for miles after fire breaks out at derelict building

Plumes of smoke could be seen for miles after a blaze broke out at a derelict building in Tameside. Fire crews raced to the scene on Club Street, off Ashton Old Road, Ashton-under-Lyne, at around 5.30pm on Tuesday (March 7).

It was confirmed the fire had broken out at a derelict club house. A number of fire engines attended the scene and spent around an hour dampening the flames.

Pictures shared with the Manchester Evening News show huge clouds of smoke seen overhead from Ashton Old Road. The grey plumes could be seen for miles.

The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they received the reports of smoke coming from the building on Tuesday evening, with three fire engines attending the scene.

A number of fire personnel were still pictured at the scene two hours later at around 7.30pm once the fire had been safely put out. The cause of the blaze has not yet been confirmed.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Shortly after 5.30pm on Tuesday 7 March, firefighters were called out to reports of smoke coming from a derelict building on Club Street, Manchester.

“Three fire engines from Gorton and Ashton attended the scene where a derelict club house was on fire. Crews used two jets and two breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire and were in attendance for an hour.”
