Plumes of smoke fill the air as fire breaks out at County Durham country park

Firefighters are currently tackling a large blaze at a County Durham country park.

A large plume of smoke can be seen above Chester-le-Street as fire crews battle a blaze on the Waldridge Fell.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service has four appliances at the scene along with a Tactical Response Vehicle.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said: “We received our first call at 10.57am and took 32 calls about it.

“We have one crew from Durham, two from High Hold and one from Consett, along with a TRV from Consett.

The spokeswoman said crews were battling a large fire.

She added: "I think the problem is the wind has helped spread it further.”

Tracie Oliver, who took a photograph of the blaze from her home on Quantock Avenue, said: “It is really upsetting to see smoke again as it is just a few years since the last fire up there.

“All of the wildlife and plants would be recovering from that one.”
