Plumes of black smoke billow into sky as firefighters tackle blaze in Heaton

Firefighters have been called to tackle a blaze believed to have started in a Heaton shed.

The fire broke out on Saturday evening in the back garden of a home on Benton Road, in High Heaton, Newcastle.

By around 6.10pm, one fire crew had arrived to tackle the flames, with a second arriving shortly afterwards.

It's thought the fire began in a shed.

Several trees at the back of the property were damaged by the fire, sending smoke billowing up into the sky which was visible from a considerable distance away.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "We believe this is a shed on fire in someone's garden, and we have two appliances in attendance."
