Plumber who went viral for amazing gesture for elderly woman dying of leukaemia receives £80,000 in donations to help more people

As the saying goes, one good turn deserves another and this couldn't be more so that case for one man.

James Anderson, a plumber who lives in Burnley, went viral online after carrying out work for an elderly woman who is terminally ill with leukaemia and sending her a bill for £0.

The bill to the 91-year-old's family was posted on Twitter and said: "Calllout to Boiler high pressure and 2 leaks... lady is 91 years of age acute leukaemia end of life care Amount 0.00

"No charge for this lady under any circumstances. We will be available 24 hour to help her and keep her as comfortable as possible.

"Depher CIC"

The 52-year-old also promised to look after her to her dying day in an act of kindness that has been praised by members of the public from across the world.

And following his amazing gesture, Mr Anderson has received £80,000 in donations to help spread his work across the country.

James told the PA news agency: "People are talking about doing it in America, France and Australia, and they're all going to contact me to get advice and guidance as to how to do it in their countries.

"Hopefully... we can bring all communities together for one common cause across the planet, so everybody who's elderly and disabled, not just in the UK, can benefit from something like this in society."

He has even received offers of holidays and personal financial support.

"A lady from London rang up and put £2,000 in my personal bank account for me to pay towards my debt, and another gentleman rang up and put £1,000 in for me," he said.

"That's £3,000 off the debt, which will keep the wolves from the door until I can get some more private jobs.

"That way I don't have to touch the funding, which I don't want to do."

The father of five children and grandfather of three carries out his work through not-for-profit company Depher which extends from free to discounted service, as well as advice on what other help might be available.

He hopes that the donations will help to increase the amount of work he offers and his workforce.

"I had to lay two of the lads off because I couldn't afford it, then I had to go out and do the jobs myself as well as the paperwork, advertising, quotes and everything else," James said. "Now I can look at bringing them back.

"We don't just have to do Lancashire now. I'm going to be ringing local engineers in the wider area.

"We've had companies say they'll do all the advertising for us including a website, all free of charge. This is just the beginning of something that can be global."

Christine Rowlands, the daughter of the woman who received the bill, told the M.E.N that she "burst into tears" when she read James' e-mail.

"It was just so kind.

"I couldn't believe what I was reading. I rang him because I couldn't believe my eyes and I couldn't understand what was happening."

James has said he will stay in touch with the family as  "without a doubt, they are like family to me. No doubt, I will give them a ring or pop in for a cup of tea."
