Plumbers often come across unexpected surprises while carrying out their work, but one tradesman recently stumbled upon something more unsettling than the usual clogged pipes and mold. Jonathan Bretts, a plumber, took to TikTok to share the disturbing discovery he made beneath the floorboards of a client's 200-year-old house in Plymouth.
In a short video clip posted on the platform, Bretts can be seen sifting through rubble and describing how he found a pile of over 20 bones. Initially, he believed they belonged to a dead cat but soon found a jawbone with intact molars, raising suspicions that these could be human remains. He asked viewers in a caption, 'Can anyone tell me if this is human or animal?'
The clip quickly went viral, amassing over 1.4 million views in just three weeks. Concerned viewers urged Bretts to report his findings to the police, emphasizing the importance of complying with the law when discovering bones. Others attempted to reassure him, stating that the bones appeared to be animal remains but still suggested getting the site examined by professionals.
As the video gained momentum, others shared their own similar experiences. One person shared, 'We had the exact same thing in my old house; we called the police, turns out my house used to be a morgue in Victorian times.' Another mentioned, 'I remember doing a job and pulling out a bag of bones wrapped in a blanket.'
In addition to the bones, Bretts later uncovered a broken wine glass, marbles, and various other artifacts. He also found another part of the unsettling jawbone, featuring a long front tooth. Seeking advice from fellow tradespeople and conducting a Google search, he eventually determined that the bones belonged to a pig rather than a human.
In an interview with the news agency SWNS, Bretts revealed that he followed the wishes of the homeowner and reburied the bones exactly where he found them. Further discussions with the homeowners revealed that the house across the street used to be a pig farm, and they speculated that the attached barn on their property may have been a slaughterhouse.
Although this unexpected discovery caused quite a stir on social media, Bretts humorously noted that he now has a story to share for months to come. However, he might have second thoughts about enjoying a pork chop anytime soon.
Intriguing tales like this one remind us of the unexpected surprises that can lie beneath the surface of seemingly ordinary places. Plumbers and tradespeople often find themselves encountering a wide range of intriguing and sometimes eerie discoveries during their work. This particular story serves as a reminder that history can sometimes be unearthed in the most unexpected and unusual ways.
