Plot and character: A creative writing course with Adele Parks

Pens on a book

A novel is a marathon not a sprint. Writing one requires commitment and careful planning, no matter how much experience you have. If you’re thinking about writing a novel, or have started one and lost your way, this masterclass will help you to define your plot, subject and theme, and create truly compelling characters.

Taught by bestselling novelist Adele Parks, this class will give novelists of all levels a new sense of creative direction and motivation. You’ll take part in practical writing exercises, and learn an arsenal of tricks and techniques that you can apply to your own novel.

Content

  • Understanding the differences between plot, subject and theme – and identifying them within your own novel
  • Expert advice on how to structure your story – and make a clear plan for writing your novel
  • How to really get to know your characters and find out what motivates them
  • Introducing your protagonist
  • Plot structure – how to maximise conflict, suspense, resolve and twists
  • Key questions you should ask yourself as a writer – and tips for how to stay motivated
  • How to write – and re-write – your first sentence
  • Q&A and practical exercises, with opportunity for feedback on work carried out during the class
