A man is going viral a second time for urging people to exact a particular flavor of revenge on Walmart.
In a TikTok with over 1 million views, @killintimecastinline responds to someone who commented on his original post. He previously filmed himself giving a Walmart in Florida a one-star rating at the self-checkout.
In the caption, he wrote that he does this “every time.”
People were highly amused by the pettiness of his antic.
Many of the highest-rated and most acerbic comments weren’t from customers with an ax to grind against the discount retailer, however. They were from employees.
Walmart workers weigh in
People who identified themselves as current and former Walmart employees united in comments on @killintimecastinline’s post. They had one thing to say: Keep giving Walmart a one-star rating.
The reason is simple. They claim that Walmart managers’ bonuses are influenced by stores’ overall rating from customers.
The workers clearly don’t want management to take home a fat bonus at the end of the quarter.
The one @killintimecastinline responded to in his most recent post wrote, “As a Walmart employee, PLEASE keep doing this. It doesn’t affect us at all, it only gives managers bonuses.”
“As a Walmart employee I’m here to inform you that the only thing it affects his the head managers bonus….hit it harder,” wrote another. The comment has over 50,300 likes.
A third agreed, writing, “Dude Walmart employee here please hit that 1 star as it destroys our metrics and lessens the bosses bosses bosses pay.” That comment has racked up over 18,600 likes.
A person who identified themselves as a former employee said that after they learned managers’ bonuses are influenced by the customers’ ratings, they intentionally tapped one star on behalf of people who didn’t bother to rate it.
“You sir are the man,” @killintimecastinline replied to that comment.
Why the hate?
Walmart is an American company and the nation’s largest private employer. The company says it employs 1.6 people in the U.S. alone.
So why do people have such animosity toward the chain?
There are multiple possibilities. For one, Walmart is a multibillion-dollar corporation. Increasing income disparity has sown a lot of hate for the ultra-wealthy. People have even been known to celebrate the untimely demise of billionaires and multimillionaires.
Walmart also became notorious in recent decades for forcing untold numbers of small businesses to close. The mom-and-pop hardware, clothing, and grocery stores that dotted main streets the nation over have shuttered in part due to large discount retailers like Walmart and Dollar Tree coming to town. They simply can’t compete with Walmart’s prices.
The major retail chain has further been criticized for mistreating and underpaying employees.
Walmart didn’t respond to an inquiry sent via the media contact form on its website.
The pile-on continues
Current and former employees weren’t the only ones trashing the retailer in comments on @killintimecastinline’s TikTok.
A common sentiment was that people don’t understand why they should give a high rating to a self-checkout.
“I just say no thanks because what am I rating? I did it myself. I’m not gonna rate the machine,” wrote one.
Another person said they give a one-star rating because “[Walmart] still don’t accept Apple Pay.”
Others complained about having to do their own bagging, said the equipment is often “faulty,” and generally expressed disdain for the corporation.
That clearly isn’t stopping people from shopping at the retail chain, however. Macrotrends reports Walmart had profits of $158 billion in 2024, a 7% increase from the year prior.
There were a few Walmart defenders in the comments, however.
“Y’all act like a Walmart manager is some billionaire sitting in the back room eating caviar,” wrote one. “They are overworked and underpaid just like the rest of us.”
