Ashes of twin sisters stolen from Queensland mother handed to police

The ashes were stolen from Donna Tweed's home.

A Queensland mother has been reunited with the ashes of her twin daughters, after thieves earlier ran off with a small silver trinket box they were in.

The thieves kicked in the front door of Donna Tweed's Gold Coast home on Wednesday afternoon, eventually making off with many of her belongings, including the box containing the ashes of Maddison Marie and Candice Grace.

The twin girls died 13 years ago, after they were born at just 23 weeks old.

Donna Tweed's mother Lee Whinray said her daughter and son-in-law were relieved after the ashes were handed in to police.

"You don't know how much it means to us to have our girls back home," Ms Whinray said.

"It's all I wanted, we didn't care what they took, we just wanted the girls back so yeah it's amazing."

Ms Tweed lost her daughters on January 1, 2005.

"I just had to have these two wee babies and they just both went to heaven," she said.

The trinket box had sat on a duchesse in Ms Tweed's home for many years, alongside the few photos she has of her daughters.

Earlier she said she hoped the thieves had a conscience.

"They can put them in the post or put them in our letter box, I don't really care … they can keep all the other stuff, I wouldn't even lay charges or anything."

Ms Tweed said the other items taken, including laptops, phones, jewellery, passports and cash, meant nothing to her in comparison.
