The family of a man killed in an apparent hit-and-run in Hobart two years ago is appealing for the driver of the truck involved to come forward.
A coronial inquest is slated to begin in January to investigate the death of 30-year-old Gary Hayes in the city's northern suburbs on New Year's Day 2019.
He was walking on a stretch of the Midland Highway at Brighton in the early hours when he was struck by a truck.
Police have pored over CCTV footage and performed several hundred checks on heavy vehicles but have been unable to find the truck or driver.
"Something has obviously happened to cause this tragedy. Knowing that people out there probably know things ... we need them to come forward," Mr Hayes' father-in-law Brian Free said on Wednesday.
"Losing Gary has made it incredibly difficult for both families and not knowing (the circumstances) has made it even harder.
"We would like to get some closure after living with this tragedy for almost three years now."
Police believe Mr Hayes was hitchhiking and had been picked up by a motorist around 1.45am before continuing on foot and being struck around 3am.
The motorist has also been urged to come forward. Mr Hayes' death was reported by a passing driver later in the morning.
"We're investigating all angles and we need to know who was responsible for the accident itself," coroner's associate Alisha Barnes said.
Ms Barnes said the truck would have suffered damage to its grill in the collision.
Mr Hayes was a full-time carer for wife Danielle, who has cerebral palsy.
"Danielle lives with it every day. Every time you drive along that part of the highway it comes back to you. I travel that section pretty regularly," Mr Free said.
"Being Danielle's carer, he was by her side all the time. Now that's all gone.
"Whatever happened out there, show some compassion and come forward."
