Plea to stop littering after 'disgraceful' dumping of dirty nappies and face mask at beach

The team at Weston-super-Mare's Grand Pier has voiced its concern over the amount of litter on the beach.

The landmark at Marine Parade hosted a display from 20 super cars last weekend, but also saw a range of items dumped at the beauty spot - including used nappies and face masks.

Now, officials are urging people to throw their rubbish away as they expect another busy weekend over the extended break.

In a Facebook statement, the Grand Pier said: "We had some great weather at the weekend; the sun was shining and the beach was busy. Unfortunately, this meant that our beach cleaning team were also very busy...

Mess at Weston beach (Grand Pier)

"We’re becoming increasingly concerned about the cleanliness of our wonderful beach and the litter that is being left behind."

Alongside images of the mess left behind, the post added: "And if you’re planning a trip to the beach soon, please remember to take your rubbish with you."

The plea prompted dozens of concerned comments from locals, one writing: "Disgraceful and irresponsible behaviour. It’s getting worse too!!"

One man commented he had been shocked at the "dirty nappies , masks and plastic just left there on the beach".

Another added: "Watched a group of kids drop all their rubbish outside KFC as they sat there stuffing their faces. Not the slightest thought to the mess they had littered everywhere and clearly brought up to not give a monkey's! Not unique to WSM but some people really need to learn the hard way."

A more positive experience was shared by one woman, who wrote: "I saw two little girls walking around with a carrier bag picking up all the litter that other children had dropped during the day on a communal area where l live."

The Grand Pier has invited people to take part in its weekly beach clean. You can join the Facebook group for the latest information.

And the team posted today (April 30): "Happy Bank Holiday weekend - how are you spending it? If you're popping for a wander along the seafront, stop by and say hi! Our takeaways and gift shop will be open at the shore all weekend."
