Plea to send birthday cards to Peggy who is turning 100 next month - but can't see family or friends to celebrate

Staff at an Eccles care home are appealing for cards to be sent to a resident who will spend her 100th birthday without visitors.

Peggy Dean is set to celebrate the milestone at Hope Manor Care Home on Eccles Old Road on September 7.

She had hoped for a “good knees up” to commemorate the landmark birthday – but no family, friends or entertainers will be allowed to attend due to coronavirus restrictions currently in place across Greater Manchester.

To help cheer her up, staff at the care home are now appealing for members of the public to send Peggy a birthday card to ensure she doesn’t feel lonely on her big day.

So far, she’s received more than 50 cards – and residents have even built her a post box to help keep them all in one place.

Hannah Blood, administrator at Hope Manor Care Home, said: “It’s just to make her day extra special.

“She loves the post box; she thinks it’s amazing. She was dying to open the parcel today.

“We’re going to throw her an in-house party because we can’t do anything else at the moment. When everything is lifted, we can throw her another one with entertainers.

“All the staff are really trying their best to make her day special with these restrictions.”

A Gofundme page has also been set up to help care staff pay for the party.

Usually money is raised through events such as coffee mornings but due to Covid restrictions this has not been possible.

Money can be donated by following the fundraiser link here.

Hannah continued: “Peggy has lived at Hope Manor since March 2019 and has made many friends since residing at the home.

“Staff wanted to do something to ensure Peggy has the best day and doesn't feel the effect of the current restrictions by not being able to have family, friends and entertainers.

“All of our parties are paid for by fantastic fundraising efforts from staff however due to the restrictions we haven't been able to hold and fund-raising events such as coffee mornings.

“This is why the staff come up with the idea of asking the public for help.”

Anyone wishing to send Peggy a birthday card can do so by using the following address:
