Plea to save historic Thames passenger ship during coronavirus lockdown

A family firm that runs one of the historic Dunkirk Little Ships as a Thames passenger service is appealing for help to survive the lockdown.

Colliers Launches say they will sink without cash to pay the overheads of their fleet, including Princess Freda which in 1940 rescued hundreds of allied soldiers from northern France.

The family has launched an appeal to pay for insurance and essential costs while staff are furloughed and the boats unable to sail thanks to social distancing rules.

Danny Collier, 62, whose father Arthur launched the business in 1975, said: “All our launches are special but Princess Freda is a war hero, having answered the call from Winston Churchill.”
