Plea to help fire-ravaged Newarthill Boxing Club from trainer's six-year-old grandson

An inspirational young Scot is taking on a mountain of a challenge in a bid to raise cash for a local boxing gym ripped apart by a devastating fire near Glasgow.

The Newarthill Boxing Club  in Mosshall Street, Newarthill, went up in flames around 6.55am on Monday morning, with thick black of smoke seen billowing out from the building.

Massive flames could also been seen in footage posted on social media.

But little Alfie Downie, from Ravenscraig, is on a mission to bring a little bit of hope back to those who use the gym but raising money to help rebuild the centre.

The six-year-old is the grandson of Wull Downie, who is one of the club's dedicated trainers.

Alfie will take on Tinto Hill, near Lanark, to raise cash for the club.

A statement on the JustGiving page, set up Alfie's mum Ashley, read: "On the 27th July the Newarthill Boxing Club caught fire.

"This has been devastating news for everyone who has been involved in the boxing club, which was established 1980’s.

"This club has created so many memories and opportunities for all ages and we as a family want to help get this club back up and running for the local community and to get the kids back into their training."

Little Alfie has already raised over £200 on his way to the £400 target, with well-wishers hailing the youngster's effort.

His grandparents posted: "Thanks for your support wee man. Love ya."

One person said: "All the very best in what you are doing the Newarthill boxing club does great work."

"We received the call at 6.55am, and six appliances were mobilised to the scene.

"Crews continue to tackle the fire. There are no reported casualties."
