Plea to give residents more space to attend West Dunbartonshire Council meetings

A bid to create more space for residents to attend council meetings after they were “locked out” of a heated debate has been blocked.

Labour councillor David McBride called on West Dunbartonshire Council to better accommodate members of the public wishing to sit in meetings.

It comes three months after some were refused entry during a meeting at the Dumbarton office due to a lack of seating.

He tabled a motion at last week’s full council meeting demanding the space is better planned.

But the SNP group blocked the bid and said there was no need.

An amendment by Councillor Karen Conaghan highlighted public capacity is greater than other councils, adding that the meetings are now livestreamed so anyone can listen in.

Councillor McBride also called on the option of live visual streaming to the large screen in the council staff area of the building to be looked at.

But the SNP councillor said it would be impractical given staff are working when many council meetings are taking place.

It said the council should therefore take no action.
