Plea to ban fishing at park over wildlife fears and 'unpleasant interactions' with anglers

More than 300 people have signed a petition calling on Bristol City Council to ban fishing in Eastville Park.

Campaigners say that in the past there has been a worrying number of wildlife getting caught in fishing lines at the lake.

Specific examples of this according to campaigners include a cygnet getting entangled in a net, a dead coot with a fishing hook caught in it and a gull entangled in a fishing line that died.

The council has said that fishing in Eastville Park lake is already subject to a number of stringent rules including the purchase of a permit.

The concern from campaigners is that the lake is a great source of wildlife and forms part of an important eco-sytem and believe fishing impacts this negatively.

They also point to specific examples that violate a council bylaw for 'pleasure grounds' which state no person should kill, injury or disturb an animal.

The campaigners also say they are aware of fishing out of season, fishing without a licence and 'unpleasant interactions 'with those illegally fishing in the area
