Plea in Madras high court for proper upkeep of water canal

MADURAI: An agriculturalist has moved the Madras high court seeking a direction to the public works department (PWD) to properly maintain a water canal in Madurai district.

A division bench of justices P N Prakash and R Hemalatha sought a status report from the district administration while hearing the public interest litigation filed by K Mani, a litigant appearing as party-in-person.

In his petition, the petitioner stated that he owns an agricultural land at S Kallampatti village in Melur taluk. He stated that farmers of the village are dependent on the water from the Navaneri Kamma basin canal at the village for agricultural purposes.

He stated that the canal is not being maintained properly by the authorities. He further stated that drainage water is also discharged into the canal, which pollutes the water. Mani stated that he had submitted a representation to the authorities seeking to properly maintain the canal and to stop pollution. Since, no action was taken on his representation, the petitioner moved the HC Madurai bench seeking relief.
